As of this afternoon's trip to the post office, I have a contract with the University of Iowa Press for a book tentatively titled The Ecology of Vidding.

My deadline is Dec. 31, which means that between now and then nobody is allowed to ask me "Shouldn't you be working on the book?" because everybody already knows that the answer is yes and if I'm not doing so it's because I'm doing teaching prep and/or I'm completely fried. I'm going to have to apologize to my students pre-emptively on the first day of class. *facepalm*

Can I ask you how Valve's Source Film Maker and its original content done to preexisting songs fits into the vidding paradigm, then? It's a subject I'm curious about, and since you're going to be the definitive voice on the subject...but if not, that's still awesome you've got such a deal, and I look forward to reading the book next year.

SFM is a video creation/editing platform that Valve uses for their game trailers that they just released to the public, which uses it for company-sponsored short film competitions and things like this - not quite a vid, not quite a mash-up, something altogether new just the same.

I hope you find it interesting, at least. And as ever, a thousand anticipatory high-fives.

Belated congrats, and add me to the list of excited readers! :)

(So instead of saying "good luck" to a writer, may I say "break a lead"? Or, you know, graphite, considering they don't use lead in pencils anymore, blah blah blah, you get the gist.)
