Bartow's comments really did bowl me over. I was still thinking about them two weeks later when I testified on behalf of the EFF's proposed DMCA exemption; I'll be posting those remarks as well, and you'll see that I actually opened by saying "vidders are good consumers"--exactly the argument that Bartow has now made me skeptical of. Which made me realize the extent to which we have been *defensive* about vidding, treating it as a toy that can be taken away if we don't behave, rather than being assertive about our right to do it. And obviously there have been (and continue to be) excellent and compelling reasons for individuals to think of vidding that way. But as a community, and specifically as a female community, it warps our sense of what is possible and what we deserve in ways that I find more and more troubling the more I think about it.
